One positive you can take away from this is, if you are a recent graduate with only part-time work/summer jobs on your CV then don’t worry. The employers in this video acknowledge that they are looking for people just starting out and it’s more about how you apply what you have learnt in the experiences you have had, to that specific job role.
It’s mentioned more than once in the video that you should do your research, understand the business you are applying for and tailor your experience to the specific role. It’s not good enough to simply list your past experience and expect the employer to join the dots. You have to do it for them.
So, say for example, you have worked behind a busy bar and you are applying for an account managers role in a marketing firm. You could say a busy bar has taught you to work under pressure, how to create a rapport with customers, remember repeat customers and provide good service. You would then go on to match this to the role you are applying for by saying that you know that account management is about maintaining good relationships with existing clients and forming new ones, so the experience you had behind the bar has given you the confidence to be able to do this successfully.
One other thing to take away from this video is to demonstrate that you are active and motivated. If you have held a position of responsibility in a society, mention it. If you haven’t got anything on your CV along these lines at the moment then get involved in your community and volunteer. There are loads of organisations to help you do this and you can give as much or as little time as you have. You can even find volunteer work that gives you direct work experience. E.g. continuing on with the marketing theme, you could write for your community newsletter or maintain the website for a local group etc. All these things will set you out from the crowd and give you more to talk about in your application and in your interview.
