The posts, funded collaboratively by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, Ørsted, and the Universities of Sheffield, Durham and Hull, will be based within the Electrical Machines and Drives Research Group (EMD) at the University of Sheffield.
The post holders will work within the “A New Partnership in Offshore Wind” EPSRC project joining a team of leading academic and industrial partners to address key research challenges required to reduce the levelised cost of electricity from offshore wind, and lays the foundation for the next generation of wind turbines and farms at a significantly higher level of power generation.
The project will involve the novel architectures and control strategies of wind energy power converters to maximise the benefits of the latest technology advancements in wide-bandgap (WBG) semiconductors power devices (including SiC, GaN and hybrid Si+WBG technologies) to enhance system-level efficiency and power density.
The project requires a strong scientific background in both of the expertise areas including power electronics and control. In addition, it requires expertise in the design of power electronics converters and associated gate drive circuits, expertise in numerical simulation and control engineering techniques. The successful candidates must have excellent communication and interaction skills as they will be required to work flexibly across the five institutions and industries, sharing facilities, resources and expertise. The posts provide an ideal opportunity to undertake high quality research in collaboration with leading academic and industrial researchers in the field.
The post holders will be expected to participate in technical meetings, and be encouraged and supported to attend international conferences and to publish research findings in learned society journals.
