Brake, the road safety charity
Brake is a national road safety charity that exists to stop the needless deaths and serious injuries that happen on roads every day, make streets and communities safer for everyone, and care for families bereaved and injured in road crashes.
Brake promotes road safety awareness, safe and sustainable road use, and effective road safety policies.
Introduction to our cause and work
Deaths and injuries in road crashes, and the extensive pollution caused by road traffic, are urgent, global catastrophes that must be stopped. In the UK, an average of five people die in road crashes every day, with over ten times as many seriously injured. Globally, 1.35 million people die every year on roads, with most deaths in low and middle-income nations. Tackling the carnage/epidemic on our roads is a top priority for the United Nations in its Sustainable Development Goals.
The solutions are within our grasp. Brake is a leading NGO/road safety charity that is highly respected both in the UK and globally, fighting for a world with safe and healthy mobility/green road transport, and supporting road crash victims. Every death or serious injury is one too many, and they can all be prevented. Every death or serious injury devastates families, who must be cared for.
Brake employs a dedicated team of professionals to campaign for action and to care for the victims of road crashes. Our victim services team provide an accredited national helpline and information service for adults and children bereaved and seriously injured in road crashes. Our community engagement team works alongside schools, children and youth to shout out in their communities for road safety. Our fleet engagement team works to promote companies operating fleets of vehicles in ways that are safe and sustainable. Our campaigns team advocates for change at government level and by vocalising road safety issues/shouting out in the media. Most of our work is currently UK focussed, but we have a growing global presence and a branch in New Zealand too.
We work from our head office in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, with smaller locations in London and New Zealand.
The successful candidate will be provided with full support/training, operating procedures, supportive management and the opportunity to attend Brake’s conferences and seminars on a range of topics.
To apply: Email your CV and a 500 word covering letter explaining why you are the right applicant for this role, to Brake’s Senior Corporate Fundraising Officer, Michael Bristow – firstname.lastname@example.org.
Term: 3 months, June to August, working a 3-day week. NB: there is flexibility around the number of days committed and the month’s worked for the right candidate.
• Deadline for applications: Monday 27th May
• Interview date: Monday 3rd June
Due to the nature of Brake’s work, we cannot consider applications from traffic offenders. Brake is an equal opportunity employer. Applications not in the specified format or submitted past the closing date will not be considered. If applicants have not been contacted by Tuesday 22nd May then they should assume their application has not been successful.
In line with our values, Brake encourages applications from people who wish to commute to work in ways that are sustainable and active; our UK head office is close to Huddersfield train station which has excellent rail links and cycle storage facilities. Brake discourages applications from people who intend to commute regularly a significant distance to our office by car.
