Questions to ask the interviewers

At the end of every interview you’re bound to be asked whether you have any questions. Make sure you have a few good ones up your sleeve to help show your potential employer that you have a real interest in the role and working for the company. Here’s a few we prepared earlier to help you on your way!

Do ask:

  • What is the structure of the organisation?
You could ask how different departments work together or, if it’s a small team, who you will be working with and where you will fit in.
  • Can you tell me a little bit about the office culture?
It’s always good to know how a company regards itself, whether they have a formal office policy or are more laidback in the way that they operate and this could help you decide if the company’s right for you or not.
  • Will there be any opportunity for formal training and continued professional development?
Shows you are keen to learn as much as you can whilst you are in the role and progress in your career!
  • What are the prospects for career development in the company?
Asking about how soon promotion could come along and what you will have to do to get there can show an employer that you are ambitious and keen to progress your career within the company.

Don’t ask:

  • How much will I get paid?
Chances are you will have an indication of the likely salary before you attend the interview. If it’s negotiable then you should wait until the job is offered to you before stating your terms.
  • What are the benefits like?
Just as with the salary, you should be trying to show in your interview how keen you are to work for the company because you think they could help you build a career, not because their graduate programme offers free gym passes and there’s a Nintendo Wii in the staff room.
