The Georgian Theatre Royal in Richmond is unique as it is the most complete Georgian Playhouse in its original form in Britain. Many of the Theatres employees are graduates.

The Theatre was founded in 1788 and has undergone a £1.5m refurbishment in 2003. As well as running a full program of events it is also home to a thriving Youth theatre with 300 members.

Over the last few years the Theatre has used Yorkshire Graduates to source graduates for a range of positions throughout the company including roles in Marketing, Finance and Business Development.

Vaughn Curtis, CEO of the Theatre, believes that graduates are an asset to the company bringing flexible thinking, energy and enthusiasm to their roles.

Many Graduates are drawn away from Yorkshire as they don’t believe the region can offer them the same opportunities as the Capital but as Vaughn points out, “Whilst arts organisations cannot necessarily offer big money to graduates they can offer a fulfilling lifestyle where your personal passion can become your work.”

Claire is from Darlington and studied towards her degree in Carlisle. She has been working as a Technician at the Georgian Theatre Royal, Richmond, for the last 6 months.

Claire’s role with the theatre is varied and no two days are alike with her duties ranging from the day-to-day maintenance of the Theatre to taking responsibility for the technical issues involved in putting on a wide range of theatrical productions.

“The role is really fulfilling” says Claire. “I particularly enjoy the variety involved in working for an arts organisation and I am really happy that I have found a career in which I can make good use of the skills I gained during my degree.”
