Electronics & Communications
Jobs in the field of electronics and communications cover a wide range of roles, from designing and assembling new technology such as the latest generation of mobile phones to handling the technical aspects of broadcast radio. The sector offers a number of exciting and varied career paths.
Electronics isn't all about putting together circuits and developing transistors and capacitors (although you'll need a good understanding of these all the same.) You could be working on the development of new technology devices such as computers and mobile phones, helping to design, assemble and test electronic systems, components and equipment.
Jobs in Communications are varied, you could be working in a managerial role or in a hands on development role in industries that rely on communications technologies such as the internet, computers, information networks, telecommunications or broadcast radio.
In a managerial role you could find yourself planning and managing projects to develop and implement communications systems, ensuring that they are completed on time and within budget to the highest standard. In a practical position you could be helping to design and deliver communication solutions and providing technical support and guidance.
In the UK the sector generates about £3.4bn a year and employs over 24,000 people. Yorkshire is home to around 7% of companies in this sector who account for about 7% of employment.
