Transport & Logistics

Transport and Logistics plays a significant part in the Yorkshire and Humber economy, providing rewarding graduate career opportunities in many different but related activities. The central location of the region provides options for road and rail transport and the coastal areas of East Yorkshire with the Humber ports provide significant opportunities for sea transport. Coupled with three international airports and various local airfields, these factors support the importance of transport and logistics for both the supply chain and the region as a whole.

Nationally Transport and Logistics is a growing industry covering a wide range of activities, and employing around 14% of all employees in the UK. Outsourcing is currently the fastest-growing feature of the industry and many companies offer services such as purchasing, freight forwarding, warehousing, packaging and transport.

Over 40% of all UK logistics work is undertaken by specialist distribution companies and consultancies. The top national logistics companies include Bibby Distribution, Christian Salvesen, DHL, Eddie Stobart, Exel, Gist, Hays Logistics, NYK Logistics, Tibbett and Britten, TNT and Wincanton.

Graduates are in demand for this growing industry. Information technology skills are crucial because of the sophisticated packages used for planning and management purposes, as are the skills of problem-solving, teamwork, communication, commercial awareness and the ability to think quickly. Within the Yorkshire and Humber region there is an identified need for graduates with marketing and contract management skills.

The salaries offered by all employers vary greatly depending on the sector, size of company and geographical location. Graduates can expect to start on an initial salary of £15,000 - £18,000 a year, with the opportunity to double this, often within five years.

Within the West Yorkshire area the transport sector is predicted to expand by 26.4% by the year 2012. Large regional logistics companies include Archbold Logistics, Hoyer UK Ltd and Marfarlane Transport.

Postgraduate courses are available at the Universities of Huddersfield, Leeds and Sheffield Hallam.
