Advertising, Marketing & PR

Every Hollywood movie these days stars some young gun working in the glamorous world of the media but unlike the films it's not all about parties, freebies and rubbing shoulders with the celebs - competition is tough, the work is hard and you'll find a high level of commitment and dedication is needed to work the long and demanding hours required.

If you've got what it takes, jobs in the industry are often varied and rewarding and you're unlikely to find any two days the same. Although salaries start small and your expected to start at the bottom of the pile, if you successfully build a strong career in the business you can expect the salary to be as rewarding as the perks.

With more and more students studying media related degrees around one in three graduates leaves University hoping to make it in Marketing or PR but with so much competition not everybody does!

Recruiters will want to see plenty of added extras on your CV and often a portfolio of related material to prove you're serious about a career in the industry. The sectors also notoriously hard to get into with very few jobs advertised so you've really got show commitment and dedication even before you start your career to hunt down suitable roles and get an interview.

Yorkshire has a large number of organisations offering relevant positions with a good mixture of branches of larger UK agencies as well as smaller firms. There are also plenty of in-house positions in larger companies on offer across a wide range of sectors, from live music venues and nightclubs right the way through to manufacturing firms and steel works.

Generally applicants will be expected to have excellent communications skills, creativity, be good at networking, be highly organised and confident with people. The ability to meet tight deadlines and deal with constant pressure is also a must!

If this sounds like your kind of career have a look around the different jobs in this sector to get a feel for what's on offer and maybe pick up a few tips to make your CV stand out in the crowd.
